The broader NSE Nifty closed 1.25 points, or 0.01 per cent down at 10,564.05.
The NSE Nifty ended at 2763, up 29 points. The market breadth was marginally positive - out of 2,523 stocks traded, 1,228 advanced, 1,190 declined and 105 were unchanged on Wednesday.
Among the 30-share basket, 27 stocks led by Bajaj Auto and Bharti Airtel ended with losses.
The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 327 points at 18,853. In the process, the index reversed its six-day downtrend wherein it had shed 7% (1,403 points). The Nifty gained 89 points at 5,609.
The 50-issue NSE Nifty too cracked the 10,200-mark and hit a low of 10,108.55 before finishing 104.75 points, or 1.02 per cent down at 10,121.80.
The NSE Nifty ended at 4,529, up 32 points.
Coal India fell the most by 2.58 per cent among Sensex scrips, dragging the index into the negative zone.

Yes Bank was the top gainer in the Sensex pack, surging 3.76 per cent, followed by SBI at 3.18 per cent.
Top losers in the Sensex pack included TCS, Yes Bank, ITC, Sun Pharma, Reliance, Coal India, Asian Paints, SBI, Maruti, HUL, HCL Tech and ICICI Bank, falling up to 2.91 per cent.
The broader NSE Nifty gained 22 points to 10,480.60
Construction major L&T was the biggest gainer among the Sensex components, spurting 2.30 per cent, after the company said its board has approved a Rs 9,000-crore share buyback plan.
This is its biggest single session fall since August 24, 2015, when it had lost 1,624.51 points.
The 50-share Nifty bounced 83.35 points, or 0.86 per cent, to 9,794.15 at close.
Top gainers in the Sensex pack included Hero MotoCorp, Maruti, M&M, Bajaj Auto, HUL, HCL Tech, Bajaj Finance, ITC, HDFC and L&T, rising up to 7.51 per cent.
The broader NSE Nifty index too finished lower by 4.80 points, or 0.05 per cent, at 10,632.20.

The NSE Nifty ended at 5,732, up 123 points. The BSE Metal index surged over 5% to 17,525. The Realty index rallied 3% to 10,081, and the IT index gained 2% at 4098. The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,865 stocks traded, 1,813 advanced, 996 declined and 56 were unchanged on Monday.
The wider NSE Nifty touched a low of 10,652.40 before finishing at 10,671.40, showing a loss of 97.75 points, or 0.91 per cent.
The NSE Nifty cracked below the 10,800-mark to hit a low of 10,753.05 intra-day, before closing at 10,762.45 with a loss of 59.40 points, or 0.55 per cent.
The NSE Nifty, which dipped below the key 10,800-mark to touch a low of 10,755.40, bounced back on late buying to close at 10,817.70, up 9.65 points, or 0.09 per cent.
The NSE Nifty ended at 4,356, up 10 points.
TCS was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, sliding 3.17 per cent, followed by HCL Tech, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, RIL, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Tata Steel, Kotak Bank and L&T, down up to 2.34 per cent.
The broader Nifty too fell for the second straight session and closed with a loss of over 62 points, or 0.54 per cent, at 11,520.30, after hovering between 11,496.85 and 11,602.55.
The broader NSE Nifty, after cracking below the key 10,300-mark, touched a low of 10,211.25, before finally ending 134.75 points, or 1.30 per cent, down at 10,226.55.
The broader NSE Nifty closed below the 10,600 mark by plunging 98.15 points, or 0.84 per cent, to 11,582.35 after shuttling between 11,567.40 and 11,751.80.
NSE Nifty, after shuttling between 10,809.60 and 10,725.90, finished 30.95 points, or 0.29 per cent lower at 10,741.10.
The Sensex and the Nifty had touched a low of 27,921 and 8,349 respectively.
Both the indices ended at their highest levels since February 1.
The broader NSE Nifty moved between 10,705 and 10,785.55, before ending 25.15 points, or 0.23 per cent down at 10,716.55.
